Removal Of Fuel Subsidy: Tinubu Declares When Citizebs Will Get Palliatives

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday disclosed that Nigerians would get palliatives following the removal of subsidy on petrol in the country.According to The Nation, President Tinubu gave the assurance while speaking to some Nigerians in France and other neighbouring European countries, however said money has to be saved before the government can embark on palliatives.

On how he convinced Organised Labour to shelve the planned protest over removal of subsidy, Tinubu disclosed that he had to convince them to reason along and allow the government to save first, or else he would also join them in the protest.

He said he told them: “You want money increase in palliative, transportation what are you protesting about? Are you sharing part of the subsidy? if you protest, I will join you and protest and they stopped. No protest.

“Palliative we will get but we have to save the money in order to embark on palliatives.”

Recall that President Tinubu on May 29 while delivering his inaugural speech, said the Federal Government could no longer sustain fuel subsidies.

He stated that his government shall instead channel funds into infrastructure and other areas to strengthen the economy.

However, the president declaration has since caused an increase of almost 200 per cent in petrol prices nationwide.

Since his declaration, there has been inflation in the price of goods and services, fuel scarcity and a host of discomforting circumstances.

In the nationwide broadcast, on Monday, June 12, while delivering his Democracy Day message to Nigerians, Tinubu appealed to Nigerians to bear with his administration over the removal of fuel subsidies, promised that they will reap the good fruit of their sacrifices.

The President stated that the temporal pain and discomfort were necessary to save the country from going under and take the nation’s resources away from the stranglehold of a few unpatriotic elements.

He admitted that the fuel subsidy removal will impose an extra burden on the Nigerian masses, and urged the citizens to sacrifice a little more for the survival of the country which he promises will not be in vain.
