Top 8 Politician children Who Are Members of the 10th National Assembly

 

 

In Nigeria, the transfer of political power from parents to their children is not a new phenomenon. In June 2023, the elected members of the 10th National Assembly, comprising representatives from 109 senatorial districts and 360 federal constituencies, were inaugurated.

Among these members, several prominent and influential Nigerian politicians’ children have now become lawmakers for the country for the next four years.

Ayodeji (Adebayo Alao-Akala)

Olamiju Alao-Akala, the son of the late Adebayo Alao-Akala, a former governor of Oyo State, won the Ogbomoso-North/Ogbomoso-South/Orire federal constituency seat in the House of Representatives. Olamiju, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), previously served as the chairman of the Ogbomoso-North Local Government Area. His father, Adebayo Alao-Akala, had a career in law enforcement as a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police before becoming the deputy governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2006. He later served as the governor of the state from 2007 to 2011 and passed away on January 12, 2022.

Blessing (David Mark)

 

Blessing Onuh, the daughter of former Senate President David Mark, has been reelected to represent the Otukpo/Ohimini federal constituency of Benue State. David Mark had a lengthy political career, representing the Benue South Senatorial District from 1999 to 2019. During his tenure, he served as the Senate President for eight years, the longest tenure in that position by any senator to date. Mark had previously held positions such as military Governor of Niger State and Minister of Communications under the military regime.

Sadiq (Ango Abdullahi)

Sadiq, the son of Ango Abdullahi, a former Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University and Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum, has been elected to the House of Representatives to represent the Sabon Gari federal constituency in Kaduna State. His father also served as a commissioner for economic planning, a member representing Zaria North-West Constituency, and a Special Adviser to President Olusegun Obasanjo on Food and Security.

 

Bello (Nasir El-Rufai)

Bello, one of the sons of former Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, has gained a seat in the 10th Assembly, representing the Kaduna North federal constituency. His father served as the governor of Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023. Prior to his governorship, Nasir el-Rufai held notable positions, including Director of the Bureau of Public Enterprises and Secretary of the National Council on Privatisation. Additionally, he served as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory from 2003 to 2007.

Erhriatake (James Ibori)

Erhiatake, the daughter of former Governor James Ibori of Delta State, has also entered the political arena. She currently represents the Ethiope federal constituency of Delta State in the Green Chamber. However, it’s important to note that her father, James Ibori, who is also a leader in the Niger Delta region, has faced legal troubles. In 2012, he was convicted of money laundering in the United Kingdom after being accused of embezzling around $165 million belonging to Delta State. He pleaded guilty and received a 13-year prison sentence.

Joshua (Jerry Gana)

 

Joshua, the son of Prof Jerry Gana, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, has secured a seat in the House of Representatives. He represents the Lavun/Mokwa/Edati federal constituency in Niger State. Prof Jerry Gana has a long history in politics, having held various positions over the span of three decades. Prof Jerry Gana held ministerial positions such as Minister for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Minister of Cooperation and Integration in Africa, and Minister of Information and National Orientation. Although Prof Jerry Gana was elected as a senator in 1983, he was unable to serve due to a military coup that brought General Muhammadu Buhari to power.

He was also a presidential aspirant under the Social Democratic Party, but the party’s ticket went to the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993, election, the late MKO Abiola.

 

Beni (Solomon Lar)

Beni, the eldest daughter of the late Solomon Lar, has been reelected to represent the Langtang North/South federal constituency in Plateau State. This marks her fifth term in office. Throughout her political career, Beni has held significant roles in the House of Representatives, including Chair of the Committee on Women Affairs, Chair of the Committee on Human Rights, and Chair of the Committee on Science and Technology. Her father, Solomon Lar, was a Nigerian politician who held various national-level offices for over 50 years. He was a member of the first national parliament when Nigeria gained independence in 1960. He was elected governor of Plateau State and was one of the founding fathers of the PDP.

 

Olumide (Olusegun Osoba)

Olumide, the son of former Governor Olusegun Osoba of Ogun State, has been reelected as a member representing the Abeokuta North/Odeda/Obafemi-Owode federal constituency of Ogun State. Olumide previously held the same position from 2011 to 2015. His father was the former Governor of Ogun State on two occasions. Firstly, he served from 1992 to 1993 during the Nigerian Third Republic, and subsequently, he was reelected and served a second term from 1999 to 2003.
